Review: Bad Things

Danika hasn’t had an easy life. Being insanely attracted to bad boys has never helped make it easier.

One look at Tristan, and every brain cell she possessed went up in smoke. This man was trouble with a capital T. It was a given.
She knew better. Bad boys were bad. Especially for her. Considering her history, it was crazy to think otherwise. So why did crazy have to feel so damn fine?

For as long as she could remember, Danika had been focused on the future with single-minded purpose. Tristan came along and taught her everything there was to know about letting go, and living in the present. She fell, hard and deep. Of course, that only made her impact with the ground that much more devastating.

My Rating: 5 Stars

Well, if there is one thing I have learned in the last week, it is that R.K. Lilley is a an amazing author.  I fell in love with her Up in the Air Series, and then I immediately started Tristan and Danika's book.  Now, I have also completely fallen in love with all of these characters.

“I wanted to belong to someone, and for someone to belong to me.”

Danika.  She is strong willed and at many times stubborn beyond belief, but that made me love her even more.  Which is saying something because normally I get upset with this type of character.  But I have to say, she is written so well that I understood the walls she put up and the emotions she struggled with.  She has had a hard life growing up, and she has a fear of people leaving.

“I want you to let go.  I want you to submit.  I want to make you lose your mind.  I want you to be so far gone that the only word left in your vocabulary is my name.”

Tristan.  Holy hotness.  This man is sexy, confident, just the right side of kinky, sweet, oh... and did I mention sexy?  Honestly, he has it all.  Dimples, tattoos, lead singer for a band, and he bakes.  Yes, you read that correctly, he bakes.  He is always cooking and baking for Danika, honestly... swoooooon.  But, he is just as messed up as Danika, but just in a different way.

“I had the crucial and inescapable realization that I wanted him.  Not just in bed.  Not just as a friend, but all of him.  Every piece of the puzzle.  I'd never wanted anything so badly in my life.”

Tristan and Danika together is like watching a roaring fire.  They are smokin' when they are together.  Their chemistry is off the charts, but it's not all about sex.  I mean yes, there is sexual chemistry but their relationship is ultimately built on friendship.  They hit it off immediately and become fast friends.  The banter between the two of them had me laughing constantly.  You can see how each of them care for the other and how they want nothing more than to be together.  However, neither of them can deny the sexual chemistry but neither want to ruin the friendship they have.  Danika only does relationships, and Tristan only does flings.  It takes a long time for the two of them to get on the same page, but once they do... wow.

“I want you so badly that I'd do just about anything to have you," he said roughly.  "The only thing I won't do though, is risk losing you.  Can you promise me that if we do this, I won't lose you?”

As you may know, Tristan and Danika were first introduced in Grounded, the final book in the Up in the Air series.  Even though Bad Things could be read as a standalone series, I would recommend that you read In Flight, Mile High and Grounded first.  Bad Things takes place before the first book in that series, In Flight, but you still get to meet some of the same characters.  I think it will make the story more rounded if you read them in this order.

The ending?  Well, I wouldn't necessarily call it a cliffhanger, but I would say that you will be left begging for the second book, Rock Bottom, which at the time of this review doesn't have a release date yet.  From Grounded, we know that there is something major that happens between Tristan and Danika, and that at the time of that book they are not in a very good place.  I truly went into Bad Things assuming that is how this book would end, with that major event.  I was wrong.  They are in an okay place at the end, so now we have to wait a bit longer to find out what happens, and to hopefully see them have their happily ever after.

“There was something so comforting in the certainty that someone knew about your biggest flaws and was still willing to stick around.”
