Falling For Hadie: Blog Tour Stop, Excerpt & Giveaway

 photo ScreenShot2013-06-08at15608PM_zpsec64d197.png

SYNOPSIS

Running away from his old life in New York City, Lincoln Bracks ends up in the small town of Statlen, Iowa. He isn’t interested in making friends or getting to know anyone. He just wants to keep his head down and disappear amongst the crowd. That was the plan anyway, until he meets Hadie Swinton.

Nursing a broken heart and the realization that the boy she’s loved her entire life isn’t Prince Charming, Hadie is set against ever falling for the same type of guy again. But when new boy, Lincoln, arrives in town, she discovers that this is easier said than done. Hadie assumes that Lincoln is a typical arrogant jock—he is good-looking, confident and charming—but when he doesn’t do anything she expects him to, she is intrigued by him against her better judgment.

There is definitely more to Lincoln than just a pretty face, but Lincoln is hiding something that he doesn’t want anybody to discover because when they do, they will never look at him the same again. Falling in love was the last thing Lincoln wanted to do, so how will he convince himself to fall out of it?

Recommended for mature readers aged 17+ due to language and sexual content.

As I rounded the corner onto Waterview Crescent, I stopped in my tracks when I saw a familiar figure walking in my direction.
No. No way. I couldn’t seriously be that unlucky, could I?
When Lincoln caught sight of me, he slowed down and stopped, flashing me a grin that I wanted to knock off his face. I suddenly became conscious of the bike shorts and tank top I was wearing. Then my eyes shot to him, and I tried not to stare.
Okay, well, I kinda was staring, but I didn’t want to. That had to count for something, didn’t it?
Lincoln was dressed in gym shorts and a white wife beater that stretched across his muscular chest and displayed his arms for the world to see. Obviously, the guy was confident about his body which just made him come across as arrogant and self-assured. The kind of guy I wanted nothing to do with.
“Hairdresser?” he asked, seeming surprised. “What are you doing here?”
    Was this guy dumb too?
I pointed at Halo. “Obviously, I’m walking my dog. And I’ve already told you, my name is Hadie.”
Lincoln ignored me and bent down on one knee so he was at eye-level with Halo. Halo began sniffing his shoes cautiously. I was kind of hoping he’d take a bite out of Lincoln’s face, but instead he began licking Lincoln’s outstretched hand.
My dog was a complete traitor.
“Hey, buddy,” Lincoln was saying in a voice you would normally use to address an infant under the age of five. “What’s your name?”
    “Halo,” I spat out.
Lincoln stood up and smirked. “I don’t believe it. Hades has a dog named Halo. What are the odds?”
“You are seriously messed up, you know that? My name is Hadie, not Hades, so stop calling me that.” I gave him my best glare.
“Why are you so uppity?” Lincoln asked, drawing closer to me.
His proximity to me made me uneasy, and I inhaled sharply and took a step back. “I am not uppity. I just don’t like arrogant jerks.”
Lincoln raised an eyebrow. “You think I’m an arrogant jerk?”
“I don’t think you’re an arrogant jerk; I know it.”
“Oh, yeah? How do you know that?”
I tapped a finger against my chin as if contemplating his question, even though I already knew the answer. He watched me in amusement, and, for some reason, it bothered me the way he was studying me.
“Hmm, it couldn’t have anything to do with the fact that you told me you’re used to girls throwing themselves at you, and then you implied that I was one of those girls. I get that you’re hot and everything, but-”
I stopped mid-sentence as a broad grin spread across Lincoln’s face.
    “What?” I demanded.
“You think I’m hot?” he asked, leaning in so close that I forgot to breathe.
The way he was looking at me made my stomach flip backwards. For a moment, we just looked at each other, our breaths entangling in the cold air—neither of us said a word. Something unspoken was passing between us, making my heart thrum and my hands shake.
Coming to my senses, I placed a hand on the center of his firm chest and pushed him back. When Lincoln was that close it made it hard to think.
“That’s not the point,” I argued. “The point is that I know your type and I don’t like your type, so stay away from me.”
Lincoln’s smile faded and he actually looked hurt for a moment. He turned to the side, lost in thought. For a second, I couldn’t help but admire his profile—the strong jaw, the straight and narrow nose and the thick, dark lashes that stood out against his face.
When he turned back to me, those azure eyes were on fire. The look in them was so scorching, so intense, that my knees went weak. It felt like the wind had been knocked out of me. No one had ever looked at me like that before.
“It’s going to be hard to stay away from you, Hadie.”
My breath caught in my throat, and I swallowed. “W-why?”
Lincoln tilted his head to the side. “Because you’re…” He trailed off, the words hanging in the air.
    “I’m what?” I squeaked.
It was amazing the affect Lincoln was having on me. I’d been adamant that I would stay away from him, that I wouldn’t get close to him, but he was making that increasingly difficult for me. The boy was definitely attractive and now I knew how Mariah had felt earlier on.
A smile lurked around his mouth. “Because you’re my buddy for the week.”
The spell between us broke instantly, and I took another step back and glared at him. “I’d rather stab myself in the eye repeatedly with a hot poker.”
Lincoln laughed, raising his hands in front of him. “Whoa, settle down there, Hades. No need to get your panties in a bunch.”
My mouth fell open and I pushed him back again. I couldn’t believe the audacity of this guy. “You are so gauche!”
Lincoln raised an eyebrow. “I’m a what now?”
“Look it up in the dictionary!” I snapped, and stormed back the way I’d come.

Komal Kant is the author of IMPOSSIBLE, FALLING FOR HADIE, and the upcoming WRONG SIDE OF TOWN. She currently lives in Sydney, but wishes she lived all over the world. You can tell she is weird because her days are filled with talking to imaginary characters and trying to justify choosing Stefan over Damon.

Komal talks too much, laughs too loud, sings out-of-tune, and generally says inappropriate things at appropriate times. She is not-in-a-creepy-way obsessed with blood and gore, so The Walking Dead is probably her favourite show at the moment. She is overly enthusiastic about video games, Spiderman, Batman films, Byronic heroes, horror movies, baking, and pretty shoes.

Jack McLachlan’s POV

Three. Long. Fucking. Months. That’s how long it’s been since I’ve seen Laurelyn. And I don’t think I can take another minute. I die a little more each day she isn’t in my life.
She’s been damn near impossible to find. Fate has worked against us every step of the way. The hoops Jim has jumped through for the smallest bit of information have been ridiculous. One step forward, two steps back—instead of the other way around. A criminal on the run would’ve been easier to find.
But I’ve finally found her. Laurelyn Paige Prescott—better known to the public by her stage name as Paige McLachlan—that’s the woman I’m here to see tonight.
I still smile when I think about her taking my name, but I can’t help but ponder why she’d need to use a stage name. She never mentioned using one before and it makes me wonder if something happened with the sperm donor. Or worse—maybe with Blake Phillips.
I enter the auditorium lobby and the thick crowd makes it difficult to push through. The Martin I’m carrying adds to my difficult navigation as I bump shoulders through the horde, so I have to apologize with each step.
I find my assigned seat. Because I’m a creature of habit, I’m happy when I see it’s in a dark corner. I sit and place the Martin by my feet. I’m nervous and adrenalized as evidenced by my rapidly beating heart. I’m about to see the woman I love walk out onto that stage.
I look at the time and see it’s only a minute until eight. My heart is pounding erratically, throbbing in my ears over the loud crowd. Finally, musicians begin filing onto the stage to take their places. That’s when I see her for the first time in three months. My Laurelyn. All the time and distance that separated us disappears upon finally seeing her face again.
She looks the same, yet different. Her hair is a little longer and darker. Her honey highlights are missing and she’s slimmer. She’s still beautiful as ever but doesn’t fit the image etched in my mind these last few months.
She’s wearing brown boots—the same ones she wore the first time I saw her—with stonewashed jeans and a strapless white top. Her bare shoulders make me desperate to touch her exposed skin. And kiss it. Her top is fitted below her breasts while the bottom flows loosely over her jeans. I picture them riding low on her hips so I have easy access to kiss her belly.

EXCERPT

I left the bathroom in a hurry, turning the corner for the foyer and slamming into him. The force of the hit was so great that I stumbled backwards, nearly falling on my bottom if not for his outstretched hand. I grabbed it before going down and wobbled on my too-high heels, clutching him as I worked to regain my balance.
     “God, I’m sorry!” he exclaimed.
I looked at his face then, unprepared to see something so beautiful. I think I gasped. And then I averted my eyes out of sheer embarrassment.
“I really should watch where I’m going,” he said.
He still held my hand, and I let him. I couldn’t remember who I was or where I was going. I couldn’t remember where I had just been. I only knew that a very cute boy . . . no, he was more than cute. He was gorgeous. This very gorgeous boy was holding my hand, and I had only one thought. I wanted to make our handholding more intimate. I wanted to lace my fingers with his.
     “I think I should,” I mumbled.
I chanced another look at him. I made a conscientious effort not to gasp as I took in his light blue eyes. I’d never seen eyes that color. Jared Leto had nothing on this guy’s eyes, and Jared’s eyes were the color of the Mediterranean. No, the eyes I looked into now were so light blue they looked translucent. I thought if I stared a little longer I could see right inside his head, to his brain, and I don’t know why that turned me on so much. I wanted to witness the workings of his mind, the firing synapses, information traveling safely inside neurons to different parts of his body. A few made it to his hand, and they must have told him to keep holding mine because he didn’t let go.
I stared shamelessly, licking my lips at one point. He stared back just as boldly. I wanted him to like what he saw. I wanted him to think I was sexy. I wanted him to feel the same instant attraction I did. I’d never felt it before. Not really. Not even with Finn. It was unsettling, and I wondered how people functioned after being smacked upside the head with it. Instant. Physical. Chemical.
     Primal.
Just rip my clothes off, I thought. Just rip my clothes off and do me right here in the hallway!
He smiled and released my hand. I thought he did it reluctantly, like his brain ordered him to and he finally acquiesced. I smiled back, a flirty grin. I pulled my ponytail forward over my shoulder and played with the strands. I bit my lower lip. And then reality came crashing down like a hailstorm, large lumps of ice banging my head and screaming at me in unison.
     “YOU’RE AT A FUNERAL!”
I looked at the gorgeous guy, and my face went white.
     “Oh my God,” I whispered.
He stared at me for a moment before saying, “Are you okay?”
I shook my head and started towards the sanctuary doors. He followed behind.
“I’m awful, I’m awful, I’m awful,” I whispered over and over. I didn’t care if he could hear.
What the hell was I doing? Trying to flirt with a guy at my best friend’s funeral? How could I even forget for a second that I was at a funeral? I was supposed to be carrying around heavy, black sorrow to match my black dress and black heart, not batting lashes and fantasizing about sex with a stranger. Was I so ridiculous that a hot guy could make me forget to have any kind of decency? Or shame?
I rounded the corner and saw my mother waiting for me. And then I ran to her, threw myself into her arms, and burst into a fit of tears.
“Brooklyn,” she whispered, holding me in a tight hug. “It’s okay,” she cooed as she stroked my hair.
“I’m a terrible friend!” I wailed. I saw the fuzzy outline of a boy walking past us tentatively through the doors.
“No, you aren’t,” my mother replied.
“Yes, I am! I don’t even know why I’m here! Beth hated my guts! She wouldn’t talk to me all summer!”
“Brooke,” Mom said. “I want you to calm down. Now, we talked about this. You knew it would be hard, but she was your best friend for all those years. Do you think she wouldn’t have wanted you here?”
     “No, I don’t!” I cried.
“Yes, she would,” Mom said. “Now we have to go in.”
     “I can’t!”
“Brooke, Beth was your best friend,” Mom said, trying for patience.
“No she wasn’t! Not after what I did! I ruined everything! I’m a freaking slut!” I sobbed, shaking my head from side to side.
“Sweetheart, don’t say words like ‘freaking’ and ‘slut’ in a church,” Mom replied.
     I only sobbed louder.
“You can do this,” Mom encouraged.
I stood my ground, shaking my head violently, refusing to go in.
“Brooklyn Wright!” Mom hissed, pushing me away and grabbing my upper arm. She squeezed too tightly, and I squeaked in discomfort. There was no more tenderness in her voice. “Get yourself together. This isn’t about you. So stop making it about you. You’re going into that sanctuary and you’re going to pay your respects to your friend, and you’re going to make it about Beth. Do you understand me?”
I swallowed hard and wiped my face.
“Do you understand me?” Mom repeated.
I nodded grudgingly, and she took my hand, leading me through the doors.

TEASER

Before I know it, he’s really close to me.  Our bodies so close they are touching.  He moves his hand from my wrist, so now our palms are together, fingers interlaced.  Fox’s other hand is against the small of my back.  My cheek rests against his chest. I hold my breath.

It’s awkward at first, but as I relax into his body and allow him to move us, I can see the private dance for what it is.  An exchange.  I breathe in and feel his chest rise against mine.  He’s giving me a little bit of his calm.  I don’t know if it’s on purpose or if I’m making it all up because I’ve spent too much time talking to Val about his new-aged hippie ideas on energy, but for some reason, it doesn’t matter right now.  All that matters is that I’m pressed against him in this little basement where no one can see us, and he’s holding me like I’ve never let anyone do before.

Extra Tidbits: The Cage (Daemon's POV)

Sitting in class was the last place I wanted to be on a normal day, but it was nearly killing me to be here. I wanted to be home with Dee. There wasn’t much I could do for her. Words were never good for grief, but I hated that I couldn’t be there for her.

I also wanted to be with Kat. Yeah, she was in the same building as me, but it wasn’t the same. I wanted her close by. I had no idea what the shape was that the teacher drew on the chalkboard. The only thing I really saw was how amazing Kat had looked in my bed - how amazing she had felt and tasted. I could still feel her without even trying.

It was insane.  Mind-blowing.

Jennifer Armentrout has shown once again why she is such an amazing author and how much love she has for her fans!

She knows that we are all dying for Opal to be released (only 40 Days to go... not that I am counting down or anything) so to help us in our wait she has released yet another scene from Daemon's POV, this one is from Onyx.

Enjoy!

Extra Tidbits: Daemon and Kat Go Halloween Costume Shopping

I love nothing more than when authors give us fans a little something extra from our favorite characters!  It can be a long hard wait between books and these extra tidbits really help pass the time.

Jennifer Armentrout is really good about writing extra scenes and this along with others can be found on her website, HERE.

With this being October, what a perfect scene to fit right in with Halloween!  We find Daemon and Kat shopping for that perfect Halloween costume.  Oh.. and Daemon is as hot as ever, glad to see nothing has changed there.

Enjoy!

“I’m not wearing that.”

Daemon’s extraordinary green eyes, the color of dew-covered grass, flicked away from my scowl to the black and red scrap of cloth he held in his hands.

“What’s wrong with this?”

Did I really need to spell it out for him? Yep. “That is barely enough clothing to cover my stomach, let alone any other part of my body.”

“I don’t see a single problem with that.” I folded my arms and leveled a stare at him.

“What?” One side of his lip curled up as he lifted his other hand. Two fury black ears were attached to a rhinestone headband. “It even comes with ears and a cute tail. A kitten costume is perfect for my Kitten.” Shaking my head, I turned back to the rack of Halloween costumes and started flipping through a various selection of sexy animal outfits.  “I am not wearing anything that has a tail.”

He circled an arm around my waist and his breath was warm against my neck. “I think it’s a perfect outfit.” Turning my cheek, I sucked in a sharp breath when his lips brushed my cheek. “So you’re okay with me wearing something that my butt and boobs will be coming out and saying ‘hello, would like to have a cup of tea?’ to everyone?”  Daemon stiffened.  I tipped my head back, meeting his gaze.   His eyes were narrowed, and I grinned. “Didn’t think so.  Moving on.”

He was silent for a whole second. World record right there. “How about you buy just the ears and wear them for me?  Later.”

Turning in his embrace, I cocked my head to the side. “Just the ears?”

The grin he wore now was half challenging and half sin. “Yeah. Just the ears. Absolutely nothing else. Okay.  Maybe heels, ‘cuz that would be sexy. It can be our own personal trick or treat.  And I promise you, I’ll have a big treat for you.”  My mouth dropped opened.  So did the older lady who was holding a nun outfit behind him.  She sucked in a huffy breath and muttered, “Well!”

Daemon glanced over his shoulder and then shrugged. “Or not.”

My face flaming, I smacked him on his rock solid chest. “I can’t take you anywhere.”   His deep chuckle sent a shiver down my spine and he leaned in, kissing my cheek. I hurried around the rack before I turned into a total puddle of goo or we started making out in front of everyone and the baby Jesus costume.  Spotting a purple fedora and fluffy scarf, I yanked it off the rack and whirled around. “How about this for you?”

Daemon’s brows shot up. “A pimp outfit? Seriously?”

Giggling, I stuck it back in the rack and then pulled out another one. “What about this?”

“A priest outfit?”

“Well, you are so very modest.”

“Ha. Ha” Daemon took the costume from my hand and put it back. “I don’t think there is anything — whoa, look at that.”

“What?” I turned, following his gaze. Up on the shelf was a mask with two flesh-colored plastic ears attached to a mask that was brown on one side and white on the other.  I said I wasn’t wearing ears or a tail, but this… oh no, this was so different.

“Oh, sweet baby aliens, is that what I think it is?” Daemon edged around me and reached up, yanking the full outfit down. Lean muscles of his back flexed under the black shirt, almost distracting me from what he held in his hands. I hopped up to his side, clapping my hands together like a seal on crack. He was trying not to laugh. “Yep, I think it is. Or you have to pee. One or the other.”

I ignored that, my eyes focused on the cute white dress with brown arms and a ring of brown fur along the bottom hem. It even came with white socks with brown trimmings. “The official Gizmo costume,” Daemon said, reading the tag.  He cleared his throat.  “Excuse me, the official sexy Gizmo costume. Well, that’s kind of disturbing. Since when is Gizmo sexy?”

“I have to have it,” I said, making grabbing fingers. “Gimme.” He handed it over, and I clutched it to my chest. I was about to make a mad dash to thecash register when I noticed pointy green ears, reptilian like, poking out from behind the rest of the Gizmo costumes.  My eyes bugged and I darted around Daemon, grabbing the costume. Whipping around, I shoved Spike, the Gremlin costume at Daemon.

“You have to get this. We could be Gizmo and Spike. And you like Spike, remember? You said he was a badass.”

“He is.” Daemon frowned. “But this looks like pajamas.”

“But it has a mohawk. Win.”

“I see.” Daemon shook his head, sighing. “I can’t believe I’m considering this.” Considering this meant he was going to do it, probably with a lot of complaining and sulking, but he’d do it, because it was Daemon.

He’d do it for me.

Stretching up to the tips of my toes, I kissed his slightly parted lips. “Thank you.” His eyes flashed an intense shade of green as he lowered his head, pressing his forehead against mine. When he spoke, his lips brushed mine. “You’re so going to owe me for this.”

“You’re right.” I grinned, taking a step back. Turning around, I picked up the furry black ears and faced him. “I’ll buy the kitten ears too.”

Daemon’s lips parted. “And that’s all?”

“That’s all.”

*Special thanks to Doris for finding the perfect costume for Daemon and Kat*
